The Philippine Music air waves with what is popular. The genre ‘pop music’ is actually a broad and general term and does not necessarily in tune with boy bands and Britney Spears. There was a time when alternative rock becomes the pop, the popular. Pinoy Music is like that. Similar to Pinoy TV Bandwagon, Pinoy Music Stream also works in almost the same way. You ears will eventually become tired of listening to the same type of music over and over again in the radio and in music television channels.

In this post, I would like to draw a line between the Pinoy Music Stream and OPM or the Original Pinoy Music. Pinoy Music Stream can be any song, a remake/cover or an original from the foreign land or ours as opposed to OPM which is originally written by a Filipino composer.

From time to time, Pinoy Music Stream is influenced by the foreign hits. There came boy band mania in the presence of the Backstreet Boys and N Sync. Pinoy Music Stream also used to sway to the beat of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Mandy Moore. Of course, these two phenomena hit not just our country but had conquered the entire world.

It is also worthy to note the impact of Chinovela in the country. Thus, we are caught with the F4 Fever. Nobody would mind before if you sing along with the Chinese boys. Not a global impact but no one can argue about the storm it brought here.

Even such bandwagon influenced by foreign acts, the OPM can still manage to recover. Although it is quite alarming that most OPM hits out today are revivals than fresh compositions, nevertheless, they are still OPM. And Pinoy music industry is still benefiting from it.

Let’s bring back and play the music you once loved and / or still loving. The following are some of the major influences in Pinoy Music Stream that I remember from the time of Ultraelectromagneticpop to the recent Ultraelectomagneticjam.

11. Double Meaning

It started with ‘Aray’… Mae Rivera’s jukebox slash novelty slash with double meaning hit. If you are grin and naughty, you will get the other meaning of the lyrics. ‘Aray! Aray! Naku! Ang sakit naman ng ginawa mo! Aray’. Heard of that? What would you think of that song especially when these kind of songs are sung by sexy, boobs-slightly-exposed ladies? Several songs did follow with the same theme and singers with same packaging, sexy. Another playful song is ‘Sisirin’ by Diwata. ‘Sisirin… Sisirin Mo Mahal…’

10. Star Struck

They cannot sing but they can dance. Watching each Star Struck and Star Circle Quest season, you will recognize that you couldn’t miss at least one signatured dance craze. I guess this is one of the criteria which the talent searchers do look for a stardom hopeful – to dance ‘Chocolate (Choco, Choco)’, ‘Bump It’, ‘Follow The Leader’ and the like.

And after the reality artista search concluded and declared their male ultimate survivor or grand questor, a recording company will produce a dance album. Take the case of Gerald Anderson and Mark Herras. They cannot sing but they have album.

9. Renz Verano vs. April Boy

One of the most popular rivalry in OPM, Videoke Kings April Boy and Renz Verano combat each other with their jukebox hits. ‘Paano Ang Puso Ko’ head to head with ‘Remember Me…’. The signatured cap versus the bed voice. They are the Victor Wood counterparts during that time. I wonder who would Mystica choose.

8. The Champions

Veteran singers are now outshadowed by finalists of the reality singing contests. This is very evident in the musical variety shows wherein Sarah Geronimo, Rachel Ann Go, Christian Bautista and Erik Santos have more TV exposures than Gary V and Zsazsa Padilla.

The formula right now is network stations will launch a singing contest. They will declare one big winner but then, all of their final six or four contestants will have TV appearance back-to-back-to-back in the musical variety show.

Then, record companies will seize the moment, repackaged these contestants, labeled their artists with nouns and adjectives such as ‘Ultimate’, ‘Idol’, ‘Prince’ and ‘Princess’.

This phenomenon really helped and continuously helping the Philippine music industry.
