Fastfood is the fastest way to solve one’s hunger. Unhealthy yet remains practical. From the five fastfood chains I often visit, I compare them side by side according to some criteria. Do we have the same observation? Let’s see.

Value

Except for the cream and mushroom soup, KFC gives more value to my peso. When they launch a new product, it is often, if not always, the price is affordable and reasonable. The original chicken burger became my favorite that I used to order two servings. Another affordable value meal is the Chicken Steak Meal compared to Mc Donalds’ steak and Jollibee’s (literally) strips. The last two are the worst.

McDonalds and Wendy’s are the runners up in the category. The barya treats, especially my favorite hot fudge sundae, stays for a long time. Meanwhile, relative to the price list in Wendy’s their biggie combos are reasonable. Wendy’s Twenties could hit the top spot yet Picadillo and Chili Con Carne rice taste bland.

The food chain which its cashier would digest more money from you more than you take from them is Chowking. Kangkong is the best example of the worst. Siomai is also high-priced. Jollibee may have the most number of value meals yet the amount of satisfaction I had received from them is less.

Cleanliness and Ambiance

This time previous slots of KFC and Chowking swap. I vote Chowking as the cleanest food chain among the five leaving KFC at the very bottom.

Let’s start with the dirtiest. Yes, gravy is refillable but customers never asked to fill the floor and the dining tables with sticky drips. They may give an excuse to soiled tables left by the previous diners. Although as the rule of thumb in service – must be fast. The crew should always be alert. But please, always make sure that the floors are not a disaster. I visited branches wherein my feet almost stuck because I stepped in gravy turned glue while waiting in the line. Too bad that the cleanliness condition is ill at all branches.

Chowking on the other hand always keep their floors clean and shiny. You always feel it along with its ambiance. They don’t have gravy but they do have soy sauce and siopao sauce. I haven’t encountered a contact with these liquids.

This is the cleanliness seen by a customer. I’m not really sure of how food is prepared which remains the most important thing. If there’s an Imbestigador-like expose, please let me know.

Meanwhile, the ambiance goes to McDonalds. Their modern pop art shows their a good taste on styling their restaurants.

Delivery Service

Jollibee delivers. I find the store with the most reliable and fastest food shipment. Although there are still misses yet compared to the rest, they are number 1.

McDonalds 24hrs 8-MCDo delivery is promising but remains a promise. What they actually have is you have to wait 24 hours before you receive your food. Since they are offering the service, when we ordered during early morning, 2 am, they should have come and bring something. We almost starved to death last year on our thesis waiting for them. Wnen I follow up via a phone call, the machine answers and lets you really wait.

I am already suffering from Chowking’s slow dine-in service. Expect worse in their delivery that it could take more than an hour before they delivery your order even there’s a branch nearby our location.

There’s no one had received a grade of 100 among the five. All of them had misses, figuratively and literally.

Crew

McDonalds service crew receives a round of applause. They are the most accomodating and initiative folks. They always wear their smiles. You’ll see what clowns can do.

Kiddie Toys

The only best-remembered well-noted McDonalds toy is the Hello Kitty pairs. But I still go for radios, walky-talkies and other collectibles from Jollibee. Jollibee and his friends are the most adorable mascot. I never like a clown or an American retired man welcoming me.

Environment Friendly

All fail. They resort to cheap styrofoam and plastic in their packages. I believe that these restaurants are the most pollutant producers because of the big volume they disposed. And most of the carriers, the customers, simply neglect this fact. We all hope that these food chain will find a way to lessen their trash. Let’s take the case of McDonald’s paper bag usage on food delivery. Unlike the four where deliveries come in plastic, it is only in McDonalds that you will receive your lunch and snack in recycled paper. Plus, their paparappapa love ko ‘to Chicken McDo and nuggets served in paper boxes.

Taste

The most important category of all is the taste of the food they serve. Yet, it is the hardest factor to consider and to compare among my short list of fastfood because their part of the line of their specialties sometimes do not meet. Chowking is entirely different in this category while Jollibee emerges from the the rest. So I go for the particular item and listed down beside it my favorite

Fries: KFC’s thick potato fries.
Sundae: McDonald’s Hot Fudge Sundae. Jollibee’s vanilla ice cream is soft and I don’t like ice cream soft.
Burger Sandwich: Wendy’s Bacon Mushroom Melt but high-priced. Jollibee’s version does not come close.
Burger Steak: Jollibee is the best. McDonald’s is eww.
Chicken: KFC original recipe and McDonalds’ Chicken nuggets.
Salad: I don’t eat that much. Wendy’s is okay.
Dessert: Wendy’s frosty over Jollibee’s frost blends and Ice craze. McDonald’s Mcflurry over Jollibee’s swirly bitz.
Bucket Meal: KFC over Jollibee.
Spaghetti: I don’t usually eat spaghetti.
Rice Meals: I go for Chowking’s rice bowls leaving Jollibee’s Arroz Cubana and Wendy’s Picadillo.

My Verdict

It would take us almost an hour (no exaggeration) to decide to which fastfood we’ll drop our pennies, er pesos because we consider some of these factors. Yet, when my stomach starts to complain, the nearest one, usually Jollibee, will be lucky. If it’s payday perhaps I will dropby at Chowking for a change and KFC for the change.
